Civita Castellana

Hackert, Jakob Philipp (1737-1807) | Painter

01:55

Through his paintings, Hackert – a native of Prenzlau in Brandenburg – conveyed the German yearning for Italy, which made him a sought-after landscape painter in his day. Here he provides a condensed view incorporating the deep valley of the River Treja with its rugged cliffs, the Ponte Clementino in the background, as well as part of the Forte Sangallo in Civita Castellana, north of Rome. He translated his natural impressions of the real world into ideal and sublime compositions.
