The four small replicas of Michelangelo's famous "Times of Day" were gifts from Cosimo I deʼ Medici (1519-1574) to Elector August of Saxony (1526-1586). They are made of Volterran alabaster. Although the material was quarried in Tuscany, it played no role at all in 16th century Florentine sculpture. However, alabaster was very popular in the Netherlands, which is why the Fleming Giambologna, who worked in Florence, was very familiar with it.
