Jiří David (b. Rumburk, 1956)

1983-1987 studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Prague (AVU); from 1984 co-initiator of the unofficial student exhibitions Konfrontace (Confrontation); 1987 co-founder of the group Tvrdohlaví (The Stubborn Ones); 1988 moved to Glasgow, then New York; 1991 opened MXM, the first private gallery in Prague; 1995-2001 founded and directed the Visual Arts Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts Prague (AVU), dismissed in 2001 under pressure from the then rector Milan Knížák; from 2002 directed the Studio of Intermedia Art at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (UMPRUM); 2012 appointed professor of Art Didactics; since 2010 also teaches at the Art Academy in Banská Bystrica; lives and works in Zbraslav; numerous group exhibitions, e.g. in Venice (Biennale 1995), Graz, Paris, Brussels and Munich; solo exhibitions e.g. 1993 in Prague, 1995 in New York, 1996 in Warsaw; 2015 design of the Czech Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Important, critical, and provocative contemporary Czech artist with an immensely diverse body of works (including painting, installations, 3D objects, photography, video art, and poetry).
