Václav Jirásek (b. Karviná, 1965)

1980-1984 studied at the Secondary School of Art and Design (today: SŠUD) in Brno; 1984-1990 studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Prague (AVU); since 1988 self-taught photographer, and since 1990 freelance photographer; 1986-1994 co-founder of the group "Bratrstvo" (Brotherhood), whose members worked anonymously and approached photography from the perspective of painting; since 1994 several solo (e.g. in Berlin, Bratislava, Poznań, and Prague) and group exhibitions; works held in museums in Chicago, Cologne, Paris, Prague, and Olomouc. Leading representative of Czech artistic photography; wide-ranging, sometimes surrealistic works which explore the mysterious, the subconscious and phantasmic, featuring masks, decadence, post-industrial buildings and interiors, as well as landscapes.
