Josef Bolf (b. Prague, 1971)

1990-1998 studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Prague (AVU); 1995 studied at the Kungliga Konsthögskolan in Stockholm and 1996 at the Academy of Fine Arts (ABK) in Stuttgart; 1996-2002 member of the artists’ group Bezhlavý jezdec [Headless Horseman]; 2005 nominated for the Jindřich Chalupecký Prize; 2011 named Artist of the Year; 2007 participated in the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York; various solo exhibitions, including in Brno, Berlin, Budapest, and most recently (2019) at the National Gallery in Prague. Well-known Czech painter, printmaker, and book illustrator; the themes of his works – which are figurative, mostly thoughtful, and sometimes darkly melancholic – are people, often children, his urban environment, and apocalyptical scenes inspired, for example, by sci-fi films, comics, or literature.
