Martin Mainer (b. Havířov near Ostrava, 1959)

1978-1981 studied at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (UMPRUM);
1981-1985 studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Prague (AVU) in the studio of Professor Arnošt Paderlik; 1993 six-month study visit to Switzerland; awarded the Jindřich Chalupecký Prize; 1994 four-month study visit to the USA; from 1998 taught at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Technical University of Brno (FaVU VUT); 2005 appointed as a professor; 2012-2018 director of Studio IV for Painting at the AVU. Since 1980 over 50 solo exhibitions, including in Bratislava, Prague, Moscow, and Olomouc; works held in renowned collections such as the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Galerie hlavního města in Prague, the National Gallery Prague et al. Since 2014 has been running the independent gallery Nová Galerie in Prague in association with Nina Hedwic. One of the most important representatives of Czech painting from the older generation; his immensely diverse oeuvre often combines painting and photography, sometimes with surrealist touches and a certain predilection for clouds, birds, and most recently curtains and nails.
