Richard Štipl (b. Šternberk, 1968)

Emigrated to Canada with his parents in 1979; 1988-1993 studied painting at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto; received the Canadian Governor General's Award in 1992; returned to the Czech Republic in the early 1990s; lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts Prague (AVU) in 2010 and at the New York Academy of Art in 2011; assistant professor at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (UMPRUM) until 2017. Exhibitions worldwide, including at the Rudolfinum Prague, Cheb, and Olomouc; participates in international art fairs (Volta Basel, Frieze London, Art Basel Miami); one of the most important Czech sculptors and painters of the middle generation with works held in international public and private collections (e.g. at the Museum der Bildenden Künste Leipzig). His works attract attention and pose questions about the reproducibility and consumption of art; he is particularly reputed for hyper-realistic coloured sculptures and reliefs (mostly casts of himself) whose surfaces are often covered with lines and signs.
