Tomáš Císařovský (b. Prague, 1962)

1978–1982 studied at the Secondary School of Arts and Crafts (SUPŠ) in Prague; 1983–1988 studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Prague (AVU); solo exhibitions 2016–2017 Úmysl, a trochu náhoda [Intention, and a bit of coincidence] at the DOX Cultural Centre, Prague; 2019–2020 Každý den odvahu [Every Day Courage] at the Gallery of the City of Pilsen and the South Bohemian Aleš Gallery in Hluboká nad Vltavou; 2022 Bukovacovana panna [Bukovac’s Maiden] at the Václav Špála Gallery, Prague. One of the best-known Czech painters working mainly with classical techniques (oil on canvas, watercolour, gouache); in the second, post-modern half of the 1980s he gained a foothold on the art scene with history paintings, always emphasising the historical and social context of the subject depicted; in the late 1990s, he expanded the scope of his work to include landscape; his style can be characterised by his vivid palette and wealth of pictorial detail, his precise choice of colours, and stylised, realistic imagery that draws on "conservative" currents of twentieth-century modern painting, American Pop Art, or socialist realism, while also referencing ancient Roman mosaics, Byzantine, Gothic, early Renaissance, or Baroque painting. This synthesis between contemporary themes and art across the centuries enables communication with modern-day viewers; the pictures have a narrative content that relates to our experiences and sensations, and at the same time incorporate philosophical reflection on nature and the meaning of our existence.
