Julius Reichel (b. Kaplice, 1981)

Initially active in the graffiti scene in his native South Bohemia; then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Prague (AVU), later transferring to and graduating from the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (UMPRUM) under Jiří David. Pseudonym "Julius Reichel" adopted from his great-grandfather in České Budějovice; since 2012, numerous group and around twenty solo exhibitions in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Austria, and the UK, most recently at the Ve Středu Gallery, Plzeň, and at Berlínskej Model in Prague. Middle-generation painter and performance artist producing mostly large-format, abstract paintings with dynamic, multi-coloured, and densely packed compositions made up of letters, codes, hashtags, memes, and signs, which he takes from what he calls the "post-internet ballast" and interprets in his own way. Faces or other structures are superimposed on these; beyond the purely visual level, viewers can also interact with the works by “reading” them.
