Cultural Policy and Circumstances of Acquisition

Beginning in the 1950s, the cultural policy called “Museum Profiling” restructured the museum landscape of the GDR. It sought to create museums that focused on one particular theme in order to consolidate the expertise for the preservation and exhibition of specialized collections there. As a result, museums exchanged their collections in order to establish unique selling points.

In addition, our museum also received objects through the state art trade, acquisitions by public authorities, or from private dealers and donors.
