Due to travel restrictions imposed by the GDR government, most museum researchers could only work as so-called “armchair ethnologists.” Instead of doing fieldwork, they immersed themselves in archives, material culture, and the analysis of cultural techniques. Only a few were allowed to do research abroad. This section shows some of the objects collected during their time abroad.
