Ethnology for Everyone

In the GDR, ethnological knowledge was specifically imparted to the general population. According to cultural policy, museums and universities were to be open to people of all classes.

At the same time, ethnology also gained relevance because of the narrowness of the GDR and the travel restrictions imposed on its citizens. Museums became places of longing that enabled people “to travel” the world without leaving the country.
