Feminist collectives in Mexico fight against femicides and gender-specific violence in general, as well as for the solution of violent crimes and cases of missing persons. The ”día de los muertos,” in which the skeletal figure ”Catrina” plays an important role, has been reinterpreted as ”día de las muertas,” the day of the dead or killed woman*, and as a (feminist) day of protest since 2018. Scarves like the purple one on display here are a symbol of feminist protest throughout Latin America.
The sculpture was purchased by the museum in 2002 through the retailer Fair Trade Partner GmbH.
