The costume doll and the silver writing set were presented to the first (and only) president of the GDR, Wilhelm Pieck, on the occasion of his 80th birthday, by the government authorities of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The President’s Chancellery arranged for the transfer of these items, along with gifts from China, Vietnam, and Albania. An elaborately crafted study set that Wilhelm Pieck received from the People's Republic of China’s government on the same occasion was initially transferred to the Museum für Deutsche Geschichte (Museum of German History) and then to this museum.
