Purchased by the museum from HO Centrum Warenhaus Leipzig (department store chain) in 1965
This box, and its lid and walling are decorated using the repoussé technique and depict flowers and leaves. The reliefs have been painted black in order to enhance the contrasts. This piece was made in 1964/65 and was exhibited at the Leipzig Spring Fair in 1965.
These objects were purchased as exhibits from various exhibition stands by the HO Centrum Warenhaus Leipzig. According to in-house lore, the Leipzig museum secured an informal right of pre-emption for decorative art objects that were not returned to their countries of origin by the exhibitors. The department store sold the remaining pieces to the citizens of Leipzig.
