This vessel was most likely a funerary object or used for ceremonial purposes. It comes from the Nariño/Carchi civilization, which lived in the Andean regions of Ecuador and Columbia between the 5th and 15th century AD.
Hans Meyer bought the vessel from a local collector in Ecuador’s capital, Quito, in 1903 while on a research expedition to the country’s Andean high plains. Meyer did not provide the collector’s name in his manuscripts. It was most likely found in the area around the town of El Ángel in northern Ecuador.

After his return, he donated the vessel and 150 other archaeological finds and contemporary items to the museum in 1907.
