The name for the “Emperor's Rooms” goes back to a joint meeting in August 1791 between the German-Roman Emperor Leopold II and the Prussian King Frederick William II. In the search for a venue for the meeting of the two monarchs that was as neutral and informal as possible, Schloss Pillnitz was chosen. The Saxon Elector Friedrich August III was happy to play host to such a prestigious meeting and also had the meeting glorified artistically on several occasions - as shown, for example, by the medals in the display case between the windows. Friedrich August III, however, did not take part in the talks himself.
The reason for the "Pillnitz Conference" was the tentative rapprochement of Austria and Prussia after many years of confrontation and bitter wars. The meeting between the two great powers served to clarify various political issues of the time.
