The adoption of Egyptian art in 18th century Europe intensified abruptly as a result of France's military campaign in Egypt. Napoleon Bonaparte was accompanied by numerous scholars, engineers and artists. The newly founded scientific institution, the Institut d'Égypte, presented the results of its research in 1802: a complete description of Egypt at the time of the campaign, its antiquities, but also of everyday life there, and also its fauna and flora. The first edition of the "Description de l'Égypte" had an encyclopaedic character. Almost all European porcelain manufactories were inspired by the world of the Egyptian gods and developed new forms and decorations inspired by ancient Egyptian canopic jars, sarcophagi and hieroglyphics.
