Classically modern

00:56

Can you recognise examples of the imitation of ancient "classics"? The curved headboard by Italian designer Mario Ceroli is a direct reference to the famous and over 2000-year-old disc-shaped relief “Bocca della Verità”, the "Mouth of Truth".

The series of differently shaped vases and a box by the Spanish designer Romina Gris are all just as clearly oriented towards the formal language of ancient Roman architecture. The designs of scarves and coloured adhesive tape from the Sam Jacob Studio were based on ancient - in this case Ionic - columns, but also on architectural elements that have been in use since antiquity - such as the astragal, also known as bead-and-reel.
