Jan Švankmajer (b. Prague, 1934)

1950-1954 studied Scenography at the Higher Professional School of Arts and Crafts (VOŠUP) under Prof. Richard Landner; 1954-1958 studied at the newly founded theatre faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (AMU), also under Richard Landner. Started producing films from 1964 onwards, initially under the influence of Alfréd Radok and Laterna magika; expansion of his artistic spectrum from 1970 onwards to include object art, poetry, and painting through the influence of his later wife, the surrealist painter Eva Dvořáková. 1973-1980 officially banned from making films; nevertheless continued producing animated films, which were shown abroad. Up to 2005 produced 30 short films and 7 feature-length films (2009-2022); numerous international solo exhibitions, including 2019/20 in Dresden, and countless group exhibitions all over the world; today the most important and influential surrealist filmmaker, poet, draughtsman, and object artist; famous worldwide for his surrealist animated short and long films.
