Petr Nikl (b. Zlín, 1960)

1976-1980 education at the Secondary School of Arts and Crafts in Uherské Hradiště; 1981-1987 studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Prague (AVU); member of the artist group Tvrdohlaví [The Stubborn Ones]; 1987 co-founder of the puppet theatre group MEHEDAHA; collaboration with the vocal ensemble Lakomé Barky; prizes and awards: 1995 Jindřich Chalupecký Prize; 2002 Czech Ministry of Culture Prize for the Most Beautiful Book (O Rybaba a morřské duši [Rybaba and the Soul of the Sea]); 2008 Czech Book Prize "Magnesia Litera" for Zahadky [Secrets]. Various solo and group exhibitions, most recently: 2015 and 2019 Shanghai, 2017 Stavanger, 2022 Liberec and Brno. One of the most dazzling and multifaceted artistic personalities in contemporary Czech art: as a painter, sculptor, performance and theatre artist, as a curator of interactive exhibitions, illustrator, and writer, poet, and musician, Nikl explores nature and the mysteries of human life and behaviour with playfulness and subtle humour.
