The Consolations of Life in a Yalı

00:54

Orhan Pamuk:
Having realised that finding Füsun was not going to be easy, Kemal spent the summer with Sibel in one of the old yalis that lined the Bosphorus. It struck me how, in telling me about that summer, Kemal chose to describe to me the objects and the foods of that time not because they reminded him of Fusun, but because of the sensory pleasures they had provided. Perhaps this is why my work on this display has been affected by Dutch still-life art, which I particularly enjoy. Life in the yali – with its boathouses, sailing trips, and shore fishing – is a particularly vivid embodiment of what the nostalgic writer Abdülhak Şinasi Hisar termed ‘Istanbul civilization’.
