From the book “The Consolation of Objects“:

In my childhood, my two grandmothers and the mostly quite uneducated domestic servants described the universe to me more or less as it is depicted in these miniatures: On the one hand, there were the moon and the stars and strange, colorful worlds in the infinitely blue or night-dark sky, and on the other hand, among these distant things, there were the familiar names of constellations and strange creatures known from fairy tales. These creatures, like those in the miniatures and those I knew from the books of my childhood, lived beyond the immediate sky, among the stars we see twinkling on summer nights. Thus, to know about astronomy and constellations was to know about these strange creatures and their ways and bad habits.
