The captain, his escort officer James Burney and the nature draftsman Georg Forster themselves took part in the Hiwa dance of the "beautiful Poedua", the daughter of a high-ranking aristocrat Raiatea (ari'i nui), at an arioi festival in September 1773. Forster noted about her Hiwa costume:
“It consisted of a piece of brown cloth, of the country fabrick; … a kind of ruff of four rows of their cloth rested on their hips, being tied on with a string; … The neck, shoulders and arms werde left uncovered … The movement of their arms is certainly very graceful, and the continual gesticulation of their fingers has something extremely elegant.”
