Easter egg

Sebastian Köpcke (*1967), Volker Weinhold (*1962) | Photographers

This egg of a zebra finch is one of the smallest specimens from the Easter egg collection of the Volkskunstmuseum. Zebra finches are popular pets and are known for reliably laying eggs, even in captivity.

The egg originates from one of the birds owned by the artist. She has designed countless eggs with techniques using ink, pen and varnish since the end of the 1980s, but not as her main job: with a diploma in design, she at that time worked as an animator in the Dresden DEFA studio for animation films.

Egg design, in contrast with on a flat surface, is not everyone’s cup of tea, because the complexly shaped surface must be worked on in three dimensions. The following also applies in the field of egg design: the smaller the trickier. In facing this fine-motor challenge, Bettina Lau-Lange deliberately chose such a small egg for her artistic designs. One side is decorated by a majestic cock, the other wishes “Happy Easter 1994”.

The Museum für Sächsische Volkskunst has several hundred Easter eggs in its collection, which are decorated in a multitude of ways. These include, among others, ostrich, swan, goose, chicken, duck and parakeet eggs. What unites them all, however: the collection includes extremely exceptional specimens in every conceivable size as a result.
