Gundula Schulze Eldowy’s photographs emerge from a view of the world that is both sensitive and uninhibited. In her work, the artist strives to capture existence in an immediate way. Between 1983 and 1986, Schulze Eldowy – born in Erfurt, Germany – made a point of not idealizing the nude body as she worked on a series of nude photographs: some of her models are very young, others are very old; some are physically disabled, others are overweight; some bear the signs of hard labor, others have tattoos. Taking a delicate, documentary approach, Schulze Eldowy shows us people who, during the time of the GDR, were hardly photographed, let alone presented publicly in publications or exhibitions. As becomes clear in the images, the body is also a social product – shaped by the circumstances of work, age, gender, and class.
