At the center of Birgit Dieker’s sculptural work is the human body. The artist approaches this subject through her use of everyday materials that are closely associated with the body. For example, she uses hair or fabric from worn pieces of clothing. The latter show the signs of life lived; they embody memory. Here, with the sequin-covered bust whose form suggests a head and upper body – a shape that exhibits wounds at the same time – glamour and worthlessness coalesce. The sculpture’s perforated surface reveals deeper layers of differently colored, opulent fabrics. The title – Little Diva – reflects the contradiction at work here: the divinity suggested in the title seems threatened and in need of protection.
