In his photographic work, Craigie Horsfield thematizes human relationships: between the artist and his model, between the individual and society, between the depicted person and the viewer. As this photograph shows a nude without a head, the emphasis here is on the naked body in relation to its surroundings. Because the print is so large, standing across from this photographed body becomes a physical experience. Natural and de-individualized, this body feels close at hand while also becoming a symbol and carrier of universal experience. Horsfield often lets several years go by before developing the negative, making only a single, large-format print. In this way he highlights the singularity of the shot, which is given a precise title including the name of the sitter as well as a date and location.
