This figure made of glued pieces of card rises up high. Günther Hornig’s tower sculptures belong to his group of works entitled "Türme," towers. The artist, who taught at Dresden’s art college, started working on this series in the 1970s. Figure "No. 3" is composed of numerous window shapes which, with their complex interleaving, do not allow the viewer to look through them. The fragile design of the tower appears to herald its dissolution. After all, its labyrinthine form – the size of a human – gives the impression of instability, as if announcing its own failure. At the same time, it gives the impression that it will not cease to grow upwards, following a persistent urge for freedom.
