Helmut Zobl is one of the most important medallists at work today. Born in 1941 in the Austrian state of Salzburg, he now lives in Vienna. From 1960 to 1965, he studied under Professor Ferdinand Welz at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Afterwards, he worked as an assistant professor at the Meisterschule für Medaillenkunst – the Master school for Medallic art. In 1969 Helmut Zobl began to study negative cutting in steel. Today, he is a master of his field and engraves negative and laterally inverted images into the steel die. He has personally created a record of his work, which by now numbers more than thirteen hundred items.

The ‘Weltthaler Nummer elf’ on display here is the most recent in a cycle Helmut Zobl began in 1972. Based on philosophical aspirations, intellectual acumen and formal execution, "world thaler number eleven" is one of his major works. The symbol of the sun represents the hope of a new, more humane world order. From the beginning, the central theme of his entire oeuvre has always been humankind.
