Female portrait statue from Herculaneum, so-called Large Herculaneum Woman

01:06

The three statues owe their name to their place of discovery, the city of Herculaneum, which was buried by Vesuvius in 79 AD. The 'Great Herculan', dressed in a thin undergarment (chiton) and a luxuriant cloak, stands in a calm, relaxed posture, her head tilted forward as if pausing in conversation.

The statue reproduces a statuary type that was extremely popular since Hellenistic times and whose model probably represented a noble Greek polis bourgeois.
