A painter sits in a rustic artist’s studio, where painting utensils, an articulated mannequin, drawings and prints, a plaster cast of an antique head, picture frames and stretched canvases are scattered about in a disorderly manner. We can see over the artist’s shoulder as he works at the easel, while in the background an assistant is busy grinding the paints. Several of the studio utensils can also be understood symbolically as attributes of a “pictor doctus”, a learned painter.
