Berckheyde painted the large parish church in Haarlem, a Gothic basilica with timber cross-rib vaulting, several times. He positioned himself about in the middle of the chancel, so that the view extends through the crossing and nave to the imposing glass window on the west facade. The sunlight streaming in from the left touches the columns on the south side, shines on the brass chandeliers and the group of worshippers in the central aisle, and illuminates the western row of columns with the distinctive memorial plaques.
