Friedrich Christian was the son of August III. The Electoral Prince was only 17 years old at the time of this portrait. It was painted during a stay in Rome and shows him in a dignified pose, without any sign of his congenital walking impediment. Over his armour he wears a majestically draped cloak and the badges of two orders: on the blue ribbon that of the Polish Order of the White Eagle and on the red that of the Sicilian Order of Januarius, which had only recently been awarded to him in Naples.
