This devotional image shows the Virgin and Child accompanied by St Elizabeth with her son, the infant John the Baptist, and St Joseph. The banner (“See the Lamb of God”) and the cross-shaped olive branch refer to the crucifixion, through which Christ took on the sins of the world. The painter was strongly influenced by antique art. The three-dimensionality and pose of the infant Jesus are reminiscent of marble sculptures. The realistic heads of the old people resemble Roman portrait busts.
