Exhausted, a boy leans against a stone plinth, holding a flag. The strong light causing the white of the flag to stand out in the darkness gives the scene a dramatic mood. Even if the boy probably is not associated with a specific historical event, it seems as if a great story is condensed within this single figure. An agent of Elector Friedrich August II of Saxony purchased this painting – along with the representation of David (Gal. No. 570) – directly from the artist in Venice.
