Purchasing works by Tiepolo, the most prominent 18th-century Venetian painter, had been very important to the Elector of Saxony’s agents. During the Seven Years’ War, however, these paintings fell into the hands of Prussian troops. This one was not acquired until the 20th century. It shows Anna and Joachim, the parents of Mary. While their child is borne upwards by angels, God sits in the heavens, along with the globe. Tiepolo produced this for the convent of Santa Chiara in Cividale, depicted at bottom left.
