These two small views of the Canal Grande are among Canal’s earliest vedute (cf. Gal. No. 586). The pictures are characterised by light-dark contrasts, with radiant colours in the sunlit sky. The free brush stroke, with the colours loosely juxtaposed, looks almost modern. Leaving the church of Santa Maria della Salute in the shade allows the artist to intensify the luminosity of the scene all the more effectively. The Doge’s Palace can be seen in the left background.
