Self-portraits showing the artist at work were commonplace motifs in the 18th century. Artists often used them for marketing their services and demonstrating their accomplishments and fame. Pesne therefore depicts himself not in a dirty painting smock, but in elegant garments made of luxurious fabric. On his right hand, with which he is drawing, he wears a large ring, referring to his high status as an artist. With an air of self-confidence, the painter looks directly at the viewer.
