A characteristic feature of the Renaissance in Florence is its fondness for line. Emphasis on linear forms was regarded as particularly beautiful. One of its most famous masters was Botticelli. This devotional image shows the Virgin at a lectern with the infant Christ in her arms. John the Baptist is at prayer. The bodies and garments of the figures are reduced to the most essential lines and contours, giving particular expression to the loving affection between Mary and her child.
