Beuckelaer painted the four evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John writing the Gospels attributed to them. Accompanied by their symbols of an angel (man), a lion, an ox and an eagle, they are gathered in a confined space in front of Italianate fantasy architecture. The Holy Spirit in the form of a dove inspires the men in their work. Many of the religious paintings by this Antwerp painter were destroyed shortly after their creation as a result of Calvinist iconoclasm in the Netherlands.
