The Dutch-born Jean de Boulogne (known in Italy as Giambologna) travelled to Italy around 1550. He never returned to his homeland, but settled in Florence around 1551/52. Before he made a career as a court sculptor for the Medici from 1561, he intensively studied Michelangelo, whom he particularly admired. The "Dresden Times of Day", probably created around 1555/58, are remarkable early works by Giambologna, which already reveal his style in the details.
