Head of a statue of Apollo (‘Diadumenos’)

Polyklet (c. 450-30 BCE) | Copied Artist

01:41

The bronze statue of Apollo created by Polykleitos was approximately 1.85 metres tall and was probably melted down in the post-ancient period. Nevertheless, numerous copies dating from between 100 BCE and 200 CE have been preserved. These copies indicate that Apollo did not hold a bow and arrow in his hands, as was the case for many other statues of this god, but was instead depicted tying a ribbon around his head with its abundant hair.
