Aphrodite (Capitoline type)

01:33

In Book 36 of his Naturalis historia, Pliny the Elder reported that Cephisodotos had inherited the artistic skill of his father Praxiteles and had, among other things, created a statue of Aphrodite. It has plausibly been suggested that the close resemblance between the Aphrodite of Knidos, the most famous work by Praxiteles, and the Capitoline Venus was due to Cephisodotos having taken up a theme treated by his father, that of Aphrodite standing after a bath.
