The relief is part of a sarcophagus and shows the deceased as a hunter. In the centre of the multi-figure depiction he is riding to the right with his lance raised and is about to kill a boar.
This depiction of the deceased as a successful hunter indicates that during his lifetime he was an outstanding man with good character traits such as efficiency, courage, bravery and decisiveness. The Romans described these qualities with the term virtus.
