Pandur

Eberlein, Johann Friedrich (1696-1749) | Modeller

02:02

This porcelain figure is a Pandur – a Croatian soldier in the Habsburg infantry in the 1700s. The figure is not just an eighteenth-century art work, but also represents a remarkable testament to twentieth-century German history. Part of the von Klemperer family’s impressive porcelain collection, the Pandur was also confiscated by the Nazi regime after the family fled Germany. Though some of the collection was destroyed in the intense bombing of Dresden in February 1945, the Pandur survived. In 1991, it was restituted to the Klemperer family together with other surviving works and, in an exceptionally generous gesture, gifted to the Dresden Porcelain Collection.
