In 1906, Karl Weule had appropriate the 55 masks and three breastplates exhibited here. They were collected during his only research expedition in the southeastern region of the former colony of "German East Africa" in present-day Tanzania.

The masks, together with the robes, were worn by men at the conclusion of initiation festivities held by the Makonde community.

Have a close look at the masks and learn more about how they are used and what they symbolize.
